You may be asking what is impermanence. Buddhism views impermanence as one of their essential doctrines. 'Everything changes and nothing last forever.' The reality is everything is transient. Everything around you is constantly growing, evolving, and changing, from your emotions, thoughts, feelings, even the plants all around you. We need to view our lives almost like a tapestry, so many things are woven in and out such as moments of happiness, sorrow, change, and growth. Instead of trying to fight impermanence we need to embrace it, because after all fighting it will not do any good. The good news is that it helps us find joy and meaning in the present moment. Let's explore why you should embrace impermanence.
What is the nature of impermanence? It's something we will never get away from no matter how you try. Just think of nature. The seasons change. The flowers you find so beautiful will eventually wither. The birth and death cycle in inevitable. Think about these things in the terms of your life, there is not much difference. The things we experience such as sadness, joy, pain, love, success, failures are all subject to change. Once you fully understand this truth, you will start to understand how important it is to cherish the present moment.
One of the gifts of realizing how fleeting these moments and circumstances can be is that it gives us the gift of mindfulness. Remember that mindfulness is being fully present in each moment, which in turn gives you a profound connection with your experiences. It allows you to notice the small joys in life that went unnoticed before. I would bet that most of you are not noticing the small things. We need to fully understand and value the current moment. It's a gift that many of us don't unwrap. It will sit collecting dust. The excuse I hear most is time. I don't have time, I'm too busy. We need to stop this mentality.
Another thing that is so hard for people is letting go of expectations. Most of us are either living in the past, or the future, seeking permanence but fearing change. We just need to let go. Get rid of those rigid expectations you have. There is something beautiful that happens when you let go of control. You will open yourself up to the beauty and wonder of the unknown and seeing it all in each passing moment.
Impermanence is helpful for us to see the beauty in our imperfections. Why? Because each imperfection is your own uniqueness to you. When you see a flower that is starting to lose it's petals, it's still beautiful and standing tall and proud even though it's not picture perfect. And again nothing will stay the way it is forever. Your mind and body will change.
Gratitude is power! When we fully embrace these concepts, gratitude will come naturally. When you treasure the simplest of things, a warm cup of coffee, a smile, watching the clouds rolling by, it creates contentment and an overwhelming sense of fulfillment. You will feel these things even with the knowledge of all the fleeting moments in life.
Once you fully understand impermanence, it will inspire you. You will start to make the most of your time. When we see the whole truth, we make the most of our time, purse our passions, and just try to live to the fullest each day. When we fully understand and realize that life is short, you make the time for new experiences, you try and deepen your connection with others, and do what calls out to you.
Let's try to embrace impermanence. It will open new doors for you. It will transform your mindset to finally see the beauty and significance in our ever changing lives. These small moments are the ones that can enrich our lives and create lasting memories. Instead of fighting it, let's celebrate the fleeting nature of each of our lives, and use it to seize each moment. Those moments are where the true joy, fulfillment, and meaning live.
