Discovering Yourself Through New Hobbies: Embracing the Slow Living Lifestyle

Updated: Feb 24

Every moment of our lives seems to feel like it is filled with that never-ending list of tasks, obligations, and chores. You may think that finding the time for self-discovery is just a luxury. I'm here to tell you that's not true! We all have the opportunity for personal growth and self-fulfillment. We get that by trying new hobbies and embracing the slow-living lifestyle. If you are like me you may tend to get frustrated easily! But if you do that's ok, it's something to work on right? Don't let your frustrations stop you from trying new things a few times, because I guarantee it will probably not go as you are expecting the first time or two or maybe even three. Practice does make perfect. It lets you see what you are truly not very good at and what you have a knack for. No one is good at everything and by exploring we find out where we excel and what brings us joy.

The Essence of Slow Living

Slow living is not about going through your life like a turtle and sitting on the couch every day eating chips. Instead, it's a mindset, a conscious choice to prioritize quality or quantity, being more mindful over multi-tasking, and presence over productivity. It's all about savoring those moments, creating meaningful connections with others, and getting joy from the simple pleasures that life gives us each day.

The Power in New Hobbies

If you have ever wanted a journey in self-exploration, incorporating new hobbies is just what you need. Whether you try your hand at painting, gardening, pottery, cooking, or baking, each one of these hobbies taps into a different facet of our personalities and creativity.

Cultivating Presence

When we are trying something new, it requires us to be present in the moment. The feel of the dirt in your hands planting a flower garden, the words in a book immersing you into a story that you see happening in your mind's eye, or the smell of freshly made cinnamon rolls that you just pulled out of the oven. All of these things keep us grounded and keep us from worrying about the past and the anxieties of the future.

Unleashing Creativity

Exploring new hobbies will unlock a whole new world for you. You will discover creativity you never knew was there. It allows us to think outside the box, experiment with new ideas, and express ourselves in new ways. Every new endeavor will reveal a new layer of your identity.

Fostering Growth

All of these new adventures of self-discovery that we partake in lead to personal growth. When we step out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves with new skills, we gain confidence and a deeper understanding of our capabilities which will lead us closer to discovering our true selves.

Embracing the Journey

You have heard me say this many times if you follow my blogs, stop giving in to society's glorification of busyness and achievement. It's not a badge of honor. Instead, it is missing out on what life is offering to you because you are too busy to see it. When you slow down and intentionally carve out time for self-exploration, you create space for creativity, joy, introspection, and authentic connection with others. These elements are essential for discovering our true selves. You are more than a to-do list, you are worthy of a life of joy and fulfillment, and FUN!

It's up to you where you want to start, whether that is picking up a paintbrush, putting on an apron, or planning a new garden. It's important to remember that the journey is not about a destination, it's about embracing the process, savoring the moments, and allowing yourself to evolve along the way.
